Happy 2023! For me, new years resolution is a thing of the past; I can’t even remember the last time I made some. I can definitely say, it was repeated every year yet I didn’t stick to them whatsover back then. The more I’ve gorwn and matured, the more I’ve learnt to accept and understand who I am.
It’s been quite an eventful month, full of happy tears, laughter, a lot of firsts, and genuine happiness.
Bridesmaid Duties
A wedding 9 days into the new year; luckily it didn’t rain nor was it sub-zero degrees. This was my first time being a bridesmaid so it was a very exciting and special time. I’m not going to share pictures of the actual wedding itself to preserve the newlywed’s privacy.
It was a Western wedding during the day and a Chinese/Vietnamese wedding in the evening with the latter coming with a 10+ course banquet – I’m full just from thinking of it. The wedding was held at two different venues so after the day wedding, the bridesmaids and groomsmen headed to the next venue to decorate it before the traditional evening started.
Food and wine, lion/unicorn dance, tears (yes I cried), love and happiness.
Lunar New Year – 恭喜发财

My second first – celebrating the lunar new year in London. Apart from heading into central London at a frosty -5 degrees C in the morning. The parade started at 10am at Charing Cross Road by Trafalgar Square and you’ll see floats (amazing), lion dances, traditional clothing from several countries celebrating this new year, performances, music, a lot of cuteness etc. It’s nice to see many communities coming together and getting involved to celebrate this special day and it was spectacular to see the public enjoying it all.
We headed to Chinatown for dim sum right after and queues were already forming everywhere. Only a 30-minute wait and luckily, we were seated immediately once they had opened. Lion dancing was passing through stores and restaurants wishing luck and prosperity to the businesses for the new year.
There was a stage at Trafalgar square showcasing different performances throughout the day. Sadly, I didn’t get the chance to watch any performances as the square and the surrounding area was like a sea of people. We decided against it as we walked past. Maybe next year?
I’ve been eating a lot of tong yuen/tang yuan (汤圆) since the new year, well most evenings. Peanut filling in a sweet ginger soup, delish! I wanted to make my own from scratch but the glutinous rice flour was sold out everywhere and it was impossible to find ready-made black sesame tong yuen? They’re my favourite too, sad face.

And lastly, my final first. Holy crap. I can now finally cross this off of my bucket list. I’ve been keeping my eye out for their next show and now here we are, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities. It was everything I had imagined but more. The contortionists were my favourite act; no surprise there as I would love my body to bend the same way as theirs. It was just simply flawless. I could watch a show consisting of only them, hint hint Cirque du Soleil.
My only regret was the seats I had chosen. Sitting in the stalls wasn’t the best choice at Royal Albert Hall, heads in the way left, right and centre, especially where the performances were on the floor but now I know for next time. There were plenty of acts in the air though, all very impressive. I’m already waiting for their next tour.
