Packing Less Makeup for Travelling

EVERYTHING IS A NECESSITY

I always have the tendency of packing everything into my makeup bag and in reality, I only use a small fraction when travelling, both within the UK and abroad. Then I wonder, why did I pack that much? I make up scenarios in my head of what may happen and am convinced that it will happen but it never does. There’s makeup in my handbag, makeup in my suitcase, makeup in my pockets, makeup everywhere.

The best thing to do is to really think about how much makeup you are going to wear realistically. Is it going to be on a daily basis? Do I need to wear it if I’m swimming in the sea or any other activities I am doing? Am I looking for a holiday romance? Actually, just ignore that last one.

Scooping foundation, primer into a pot (separately) will save a lot of space, especially in your hand luggage for those short holidays or weekends away. I always mix two shades together and carrying both bottles can be a pain. Even carrying one is a pain when placing it into a clear liquids bag. Put those travel pots to good use. If you’re brave enough, leave the foundation at home and let your skin breathe. A good concealer is all you need.

Pick an eyeshadow palette that you can use to create a day time look, then transform it to a night look with shades from the same palette; and I’m not talking about bringing your 120 Man eyeshadow palette even if it is tempting.

You may be a lipstick gal rather than an eyeshadow one. To be honest, I’m sure you can squeeze your whole lipstick collection into the nuts and cranny of the suitcase, hidden pockets etc. Rule of thumb, you only need 2 lipsticks max. One natural shade and one, oh look at my lips shade (bright or dark). But we all know we will carry an extra one in our handbag so let’s make it 3 altogether. It’s a natural instinct. A tinted lip balm is all you need if you’re low maintenance.

For those cheeks of yours, again a palette. Contour, highlight and a blush shade in one palette. This can also be used as an eyeshadow if you don’t want to bring eyeshadow. Contour and highlight the eye too. If you have a cheeks palette that doesn’t have a blusher, pick your favourite blusher, one that you know will be used every day.

Think outside the box. Pack items that can be used for multiple purposes. For example, the contour palette I have mentioned previously, lip and cheek tint in one, blusher can be used as an eyeshadow if it’s the correct shade and there’s many more. Eyeshadow as contour or filling in the brows, used as a blusher too. I always find powder products are the most versatile type of products to use. There are palettes that have a bit of everything too. Especially those travel exclusive sets you can get at duty-free

I ditch the lipstick on holiday and instead go for a moisturising lipgloss or even just a rub of vaseline to protect my lips from the sun.

Great tips, I try to take just what I need where possible, not always easy to know what that will be.

For most things I tend to take just one of so for example instead of all the eyeliners I use I opt for just one. Then a single eyeshadow or small palette and then just a couple of lipsticks. x

My packing light is me taking a lot haha! I've just come back from 10 days away and took so much but I do go out every night, wear make up every single day and love to switch it up. I used everything I took! You have some wonderful tips for people who aren't sure they are going to use what they take though xx

I'm actually quite good – I pack a fair few lipsticks and maybe 1 blush, eyebrow pencil, foundation (which I don't really wear other than for evening meals), water proof mascara and 1 eyeshadow/liner. Boom. H x

  20. My make up is pretty light anyway, but I do double up with bronzer for eyeshadow, and have my lashes dyed before I leave so there is no need for mascara.
